James Suckling Tasting Report Etna 2013

James Suckling on Terre Nere: “For me, the wines of Tenuta delle Terre Nere dominate the quality winemaking scene in Etna with their various single-vineyard bottlings. Each one from Santo Spirito to Calderara Sottana delivers unique drinking experiences. In 2011, I was particularly impressed with Santo Spirito, which not only showed amazing aromatic intensity but a rich and velvety-textured mouthfeel. This is a wine that needs at least two or three years to show it true classic quality.”

Etna Bianco Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2012

JS:92 “This is a very rich and creamy white from Etna with a fresh tropical fruit character and mineral undertones. It's full-bodied with lovely fruit and a long, flavorful finish. So much going on here. Drink now.”

Etna Calderara Sottana Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2011

JS:93 “Aromas of dried fruits and smoked meats follow through to a full body, round tannins and a long, soft-textured finish. Beautifully velvety mouthfeel.”

Etna Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro delle Rose Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2011

JS:93 “Loads of blackberries and spices on the nose here. Some asphalt too. Full body, super-integrated tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Delicious now but a year or two will soften the tannins.”

Etna Guardiola Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2011

JS:94 “Aromas of plums, flowers and tangerines follow through to a full body, round tannins and a gorgeous aftertaste. So many subtle flavors here. Drink or hold.”

Etna Santo Spirito Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2011

JS:95 “Amazing aromas of tangerines, strawberries and blueberries with hints of volcanic ash. Full body, round and velvety tannins and a fresh finish. Want to drink this now but should really wait a couple of years! Best ever from this vineyard.”
